Any occurrence which does or may affect the safety of the Railway, its engines , rolling_stock, permanent way works,passengers and/or servants or which affects the safety of others or which does or many cause loss to the Railway or serious delays to trains. is called an accident. Usually occurrences which take place within Railway limits only are treated as accidents, but natural calamities such also be treated as accidents if they seriously threaten the safety of the line
রেলওয়ে, এর ইঞ্জিন, রোলিং স্টক, স্থায়ী ট্র্যাক বা লাইনের কাজ, যাত্রী এবং/অথবা রেলকর্মীদের নিরাপত্তা বিঘ্নিত করে বা করতে পারে এমন যেকোনো ঘটনা, অথবা যা অন্যের নিরাপত্তাকে প্রভাবিত করে, কিংবা যার ফলে রেলওয়ের ক্ষতি বা ট্রেনের মারাত্মক বিলম্ব ঘটে বা ঘটতে পারে, তাকে দুর্ঘটনা বলা হয়। সাধারণত কেবল রেলওয়ের সীমানার মধ্যে ঘটে যাওয়া ঘটনাগুলোকেই দুর্ঘটনা হিসেবে গণ্য করা হয়, তবে প্রাকৃতিক দুর্যোগগুলো যদি রেললাইনের নিরাপত্তাকে মারাত্মকভাবে হুমকির মুখে ফেলে, তবে সেগুলোকে দুর্ঘটনা হিসেবে বিবেচনা করা হবে।
